Honor Thyself, curated by Mueni Loko Rudd, shares a collection of photography and painting works from Black women- identifying artists based across Texas. The rationale of this show is rooted in the curator’s prioritization of local Black communities and sisterhood in art programming. The intention of Honor Thyself is deeply motivated to create safe local art spaces that lovingly amplify the complexities and differences of Black artists in the lone star state. Cindy Elizabeth and Alexis Pye touchingly center and reimagine ways we receive concepts of Blackness in their pieces. They invite viewers to revisit the perceptions of humanity in the subjects, their possessions, rituals, or the spaces they take up. Honor Thyself is a reminder to self-actualize, heal, and divest from colonial patriarchal ideas of worth in art culture to get a little more free.
